Learn how addiction works, and can be treated with current recovery methods

What is addiction? Addiction is a condition in which something that started as pleasurable now feels like something you can’t live without. Doctors define drug addiction as an overwhelming craving for a drug, and continued use of the drug despite repeated and harmful consequences. It is characterized by drug cravings, progressively increased tolerance and physical dependence (being dope sick upon medication withdrawal).

Opioids are highly addictive, in large part because they activate powerful reward centers in your brain. They trigger the release of endorphins, your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, and endorphins muffle your perception of pain and boost feelings of pleasure, creating a temporary but powerful sense of well-being. When an opioid dose wears off, you may find yourself wanting those good feelings back, as soon as possible. Opioid use, even when it is short term, can lead to addiction and, sadly very often, overdose.

Our Medication Maintenance Program does not require daily visits.

The illustration depicts the loss of life focus which occurs in opioid addiction progression. As a tolerance to opioids builds, users must take more of the drug to achieve the same effect. Preoccupation (or mental preoccupation) is a symptom of addiction progression in which thinking about opiate use and planning for opiate use begin to dominate conscious thought & waking time. Once full blown physical withdrawal emerges, mental preoccupation can become so overpowering that the individual's life becomes replaced by daily craving for opiates and the need to obtain them.
